John Eliot Gardiner with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic

John Eliot Gardiner continues his guest conducting engagements in 2016 spending two weeks in May and June with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic.

On 12-13 May, Gardiner conducted the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in a programme of Brahms, Mendelssohn and Schumann, with renowned soloists Isabelle Faust and Kristian Bezuidenhout.

"Kaum ein anderer Dirigent hat sich so viele Verdienste um Schumanns Sinfonik erworben wie John Eliot Gardiner. Er hat nie versucht, ihn zu verbessern, um zu zeigen, was er gemeint haben könnte. Gardiner hat sich immer bemüht, die Töne hörbar zu machen, die Schumann aufschrieb."
Peter Korfmacher, Leipziger Volkzeitung

John Eliot Gardiner returns to Leipzig with the Monteverdi Choir in September to perform Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang" with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. We also look forward to welcoming Kristian Bezuidenhout to join the ORR tour of Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert in November.

From 2-4 June, Gardiner led the Berlin Philharmonic in performances of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Apollon Musagete. Described by the Berliner Zeitung as:

A “spectacularly perfect performance” of Stravinsky’s operatic oratorio Oedipus Rex, which also proved how “with a conductor whose roots lie in the interpretation of early music, Stravinsky’s neoclassicism is in very good hands”.

Philipp Kohl, Berliner Zeitung

"Als ein Pionier historischer Aufführungspraxis betont er das Alte wie das Neue in der Partitur, das 20. Jahrhundert vor allem in Temponuancierung und Dynamik bis in das feine Violinsolo von Andreas Buschatz."

Sybill Mahlke, Tagesspiegel

Watch Beethoven's 5th at St John Smith Square
This weekend the BBC will be broadcasting two programmes about Beethoven's 5th Symphony featuring Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.

On Saturday 28th there will be a documentary on the work presented by John Eliot Gardiner with Ian Hislop on BBC 2 at 9pm and the ORR's performance will be broadcast the following day on BBC 4 at 7pm. The programmes will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer for 28 days after each broadcast.

The traditional wisdom is that in his 5th Symphony, Beethoven is railing against fate and his deafness. But John Eliot Gardiner believes the music expresses Beethoven's belief in the French Revolution. This is turbulent music from a turbulent man living in a turbulent age. John Eliot Gardiner and Ian Hislop bring to life the exciting and dangerous times that shaped Beethoven personally and creatively.

Launching Monteverdi 450

Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore Venice

In preparation for our ambitious international tour for Monteverdi’s 450th anniversary, we conducted a series of workshops under the auspices of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice the Accademia Monteverdiana. The week of study and exploration culminated in a final showcase concert to launch our 2017 tour: Monteverdi 450.

Oliver Condy, Editor of BBC Music Magazine visits us during a rehearsal of Monteverdi's Hor che'l ciel e la terra (Book VIII of the Madrigals, text from Petrarch's Canzoniere):

"It's an extraordinary sonnet, full of natural rhythm and linguistic contrasts, which Monteverdi feeds off in his inimitably colourful and dramatic fashion: sighing falls, harmonic clashes, breathtaking vocal scales… Gardiner encourages his singers to dig deep into their colour palette to reveal Monteverdi's astonishing inventiveness."

Carlo Emilio Tortado, writing on the Accademia's final showcase for TeatriOnline:

"After an intensive five day workshop in preparation for the three fully surviving works of Monteverdi (L'Orfeo, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, L'incoronazione di Poppea), the audience was given a insightful preview of the content, almost like a look behind the curtains."

Paolo Petazzi, reviews the final showcase for Classic Voice★★★★★

"One clearly senses, already at this stage, the search for an intense and direct expressiveness, one that is historically grounded but alien to certain distinctive styles preferred by other interpreters. [...] All in all an exquisite taste of what we will be hearing in June next year." (Translated from Italian)
